Chapter 12

Life Will Have Given Me the Truth

When her shift ended, Casey had calmed down enough to realize there was something Harry said that was especially important. He wanted the money, but he also wanted the flash drive. So far as she knew, there was nothing on that flash drive but soft-core lesbian porn. The fact that Harry mentioned it didn’t make a bit of sense to her. Yet, he’d said it twice. He seemed to want it as much as he wanted the money. She could have dismissed it as meaningless if that flash drive had been floating loose in the duffel bag. It wasn’t loose. It was in a sealed envelope, and Harry wanted it. He had asked for it specifically. It had to be very, very important.

Casey returned home, put the flash drive into her computer, and had another look. It was a 28-minute film that was short on plot. It was called “Me and My Best Friend” about two high school girls, played by adult porn actresses who were too old to pass for teens. What little plot there was dealt with the two of them putting their friendship at risk to become lovers, liking it, and then convincing two of their other high school girlfriends, who also looked like they were in their mid-20s, to join in.

Casey watched every frame, then looked at the credits at the end. She did a web search on the people named in the credits and discovered that they were pretty ordinary names in the lesbian pornography business from almost 40 years earlier. She found nothing to indicate that the flash drive contained anything of value.

Then she heard the sound of several cars pulling up in her front yard. She ran to her window and saw Kubark leading a team of FBI officers and forensics people to the front door. He had a small sheaf of papers in his right hand that she suspected was a search warrant. Casey wasted no time returning to her computer and popping the flash drive out. She taped it up under the keyboard drawer of her desk so it couldn’t be seen. The only way someone would find it was if they put their hand to the back and felt around at the top rear of the drawer.

Kubark knocked and waited for Robyn to open the door. He thrust the search warrant at her, and he and his men passed her and worked their way into the house like columns of ants.

“You can’t do this,” Robyn said.

“Read the warrant,” Kubark answered.

They searched through everything, opened every drawer, spilled the contents onto the floor, and then went through that in greater detail. They were immediately into the dresser drawers and the closets, pulling out clothing and going through the pockets of every garment they found. When they were done, they left the pile of clothing on the floor in the middle of the rooms.

One of the agents who came in was Wiggins, the black fed at Brower Aviation on the day it was robbed.
